Background:
In 2005 the AHA Guidelines for CPR and ECC noted the need to increase the prevalence and quality of bystander CPR.
In 2007, a subcommittee of the BLS (Basic Life Support) resolved to identify messaging that would further advance the spirit of the 2005 Guidelines to encourage appropriate bystander response to out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest.
Here is the resulting Advisory Statement:
- Hands-Only (compression-only) CPR: a call to action for bystander response to adults
who experience out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest.
And the Core Message of the Statement:
- Bystanders are encouraged to call 911 and provide good quality chest compressions with minimal interruption to adult victims of sudden cardiac arrest;
- For witnessed adult sudden cardiac arrest, Hands-Only CPR or conventional CPR are equally effective;
- Bystanders should use the method with which they are confident they can provide chest compressions with minimal interruption.
