I'm equally excited to share that my good friend and nominee, Lauren Mireles, was also chosen as a Go Red model. Fortunately, Lauren hasn't personally suffered any cardiac events but she has plenty of experience dealing with family members who have.
In her freetime, Lauren writes a blog, On the Go with L. She just posted a new entry all about her day as a GRFW model, complete with behind the scenes photos. Please visit Lauren's blog to read all about it -- and please leave a comment. Remember, blogs are part of a conversation!
Lauren, who used to work with me at that foundation run by Sandy Levy's boyfriend, is now the tradeshow manager for National Instruments, one of the best places to work in Austin (other than the AHA, obvously. OBVIOUSLY!) When she's not dog sitting Uli for me as I jet around the Affiliate, Lauren dotes on her super cute puppy, Major (full name: Major Applewhite) and her husband, Richard, who also works at NI. Scroll through her blog for some super cute pics of Major and the Mireles family. (That's Major over there during his first visit to PetsMart.)Thanks to Yvette, for suggesting Lauren write a guest blog for us. She'll probably still do that but I was to impatient to wait for it!

WOW, Major is precious! What a cutie! Congratulations to Lauren on her selection as a National Go Red for Women model. It really is powerful to have real women sharing real stories about their history with heart disease. Thanks Lauren for your willingness to share with others.
Heart disease and stroke survivors, or even women like Lauren that have heart disease in their family and realize they are at risk, can make a huge impact on the lives of others.
The basis behind the Go Red for Women campaign is very grassroots--women urging other women to visit their doctor, learn their risk facotrs and take action to prevent the disease. If just one woman reads Lauren's blog and is moved to visit her doctor and get her heart checked the campaign and Lauren's story have been a success.
Thanks again to Lauren, Lupe and all the women who are willing to share their stories in hopes that other women will take action and love their hearts.
What a cute puppy. That is high praise coming from the cat lady.
While I whined a lot about the casting call last year because it landed in our laps without warning right before Christmas, the concept is incredible. Having women from all over the country CVD and stroke serve as the faces of our campaign is very powerful.
The puppy is too cute! The best plan in advertising is to use kids and pets...never fails.
We're very excited to have someone from DFW selected - we actually have two ladies featured! What a great opportunity to help get the word out about CVD. If we can reach just one person it will be a success.
I'm also so sorry to hear about Lauren's grandmother. My thoughts are with her.
You had me a dog and then the picture...looks just like my Schylor Louise when she was a mere 3 months old. She's now going on 12 and the BEST friend and companion I've ever had!
Lauren, you are the REAL face of what and why we are trying so hard each day to get women to HEAR the message and DO something about it.
Your blog is soulful; it touched my heart. In March of this year I lost my aunt to stroke. It was the most painful thing to watch a vibrant 80 something woman go to being confused invalid. The biggest blessing I got was being w/ her the day she passed.
Keep your memories close, recite them to others - you will gain so much comfort.
My heart goes out to you!
